Neko Clock

The time as stray cats live it

Cats don't live by the clock. They live by daylight. Neko Clock makes sunrise cat 6:00 and sunset cat 18:00, and shows you cat time.

Are the cats outside on their dawn hunt, or napping? How long until the dusk hunt? Neko Clock shows when the cats in your neighborhood get moving, in cat time and by part of the day. Log the cats you meet, and it will learn when you usually run into them.

Cat time

Sunrise is cat 6:00 and sunset is cat 18:00. Day and night are each split into 12 hours, so a cat hour changes length with the seasons, like Japan's old temporal hours.

On the human clock, sunrise in Tokyo moves from about 4:25 in summer to about 6:50 in winter, nearly two and a half hours apart. In cat time, a cat's day follows the same schedule all year.

  • Dawn Hunt — cat 5 to 7. The sky starts to lighten, and mice and small birds start moving
  • Nap — cat 7 to 17. While the sun is high, cats mostly sleep in the shade or in a sunny spot
  • Dusk Hunt — cat 17 to 19. From late afternoon until dark
  • Night Patrol — cat 19 to 5. Cats walk the rounds of their territory

Real stray cats also adjust to feeding times and to the heat and cold. Cat time is a guide to when cats are most likely to be active.

What it does

  • Cat time now — the cat hour, the current part of the day, and how long until the next one. It also shows today's cat schedule and the times of sunrise and sunset
  • A log of the cats you meet — tap “Met a Cat” and a record opens with the time filled in. Choose how you met (Spotted, Up Close, Fed or On Camera), the cat's name, the place and a note, then save it. You can fix the time later
  • By Cat Time — counts the same records by human hour and by cat hour, side by side. Meetings that scatter across the seasons on the human clock show whether they gather in hunting time
  • When You Usually Meet — after about three meetings around the same time, it shows when you usually meet. It looks for them in cat time, so the result doesn't drift with the seasons, and it converts it to today's human time
  • Notifications — a heads-up before the time you usually meet, or before the dawn and dusk hunts. Only the ones you choose, and they start off
  • Look Up — find the cat time for any date and time. For a time that has passed, you can log a meeting right there
  • Home Screen widget — the cat hour, the current part of the day, and how long until the next one. Tap “Met a Cat” to open the app with a new record
